    Academic science is a brutal, unforgiving discipline, cold-hearted and monastic. I love science, but any allegiance to anything else is seen within the academy as being weak and second-rate. I have been told this myself over and over, even though I utterly disagree.

    You’ve fought the good fight, and contributed more than most. You deserve our salute. Rest well.
